This is a modern music education resource containing a
great number of really sensible and helpful songs,
activities and supporting texts. 'Move It' comprises a book
and a double audio CD set. What impresses me immediately is
the clarity of presentation that indeed reflects the clarity
of pedagogical thought that has gone into this. It is
obvious to me that the authors and creators of the music and
the pedagogical content of 'Move It' did engage groups of
children of various ages with these materials. But the text offers more than activities. A succinct and
yet most informative introductory section presents insights
into all the important issues pertaining to current
curriculum and music lesson planning. As well as this
&endash; most importantly &endash; the contemporary
adaptation of the Orff approach is explained in clear and
understandable terms. The materials themselves are mapped
out with a great deal of lucidity: The music first and then
following on the next page are the suggestions and
activities. When the printed music is longer than a page,
the ideas and activities follow immediately afterwards. The
Glossary towards the end of the book, again, is most
educational and helpful with a large variety of expressions
that can easily be checked. The double CD set is filled with snazzy, jazzy, rocky and
yet very diverse uplifting musical and vocal arrangements.
The creators of these arrangements take the listener on a
musical journey full of sound-wise diversity and yet held
together by re-occurring sounds and riffs that give the
recording an overall musical flair of its own. Brassy
arrangements flanked by drum kit and bass guitar, African
Djembe, sometimes clearly in the foreground; then also
xylophones, glockenspiels, violin, accordion - in short a
great diversity of music that can not only be made, but also
listened to. And above and with all of that a vocal clarity,
a tunefulness and a pitch accuracy by the professional
vocalist(s) that is in my view of top quality. The creators
of this package have found a way to combine electronically
generated sounds with naturally recorded instruments. This is a very good, very useful and very uplifting music
education resource. I very much commend 'Move It' to
you!
