Arrangements for Classroom Music

Rationale

This resource has been developed to give upper-primary (grade 5, 6) and lower-secondary (grade 7, 8, 9) school students an opportunity to experience the elements of style while developing performance, listening and composition skills. It can be used as an extension of any music series or it can be used on its own. It contains pieces that allow young people to:

  • Experience various styles of music through performance.
  • Develop performance skills - e.g. part independence, beat competence, improvisation, instrumental technique on a variety of instruments.
  • Build on their understanding of musical concepts.
  • Have creative input through arranging, improvising and compositional activities.
  • Participate in ensemble works regardless of their level of musical skills.

Using this resource

  • Parts are suggestions only, and teachers and students are encouraged to adapt, modify, simplify to suit the abilities of the students.
  • Instrumentation is suggested only, and the flexibility to change the number and type of instruments playing any part exists and is encouraged.
  • Many of the arrangements contain scope for students to improvise either as a group or individually.
  • Most of the parts are ostinatos to ensure all students can participate in the performance. Teachers and students are encouraged to simplify or compose alternative ostinatos.
  • Arrangements range from easy to more challenging, although each piece can be simplified by the teacher.
  • Keyboard parts can be played by the teacher or competent students, or broken up and played on tuned percussion depending on the level of skills in class.
