On Sunday afternoon 9 January 2005
between 2.00pm and 6.00pm there will be an opportunity
to revise some of the learning outcomes of previous Orff
Level 1 and Level 2 Courses. In particular some outcomes
pertaining to learning fields such as orchestration,
technique and improvisation that have been covered in levels
1 and 2 will be revised and practiced. It is hoped that this
will enable participants to move into the Level 3 or Level 4
course with gusto, confidence and competence. We will meet at ACU, 115 Victoria
Parade, in FRONT OF the main building at 2.00pm sharp. Then
we will go into the Lower Ground Floor Music Room. My mobile
phone number is 0419 305 887. Greetings from Level Three -
Pedagogy: Have to teach
melodic improvisation over I-IV-V chords in the context of a
song. Song should have a regular I-IV-V pattern to make it
easier to teach. Participants should come to the course
armed with a song they know that uses a I-IV-V pattern and
have thought about how they will teach improvisation for
that song. Level Four -
Pedagogy: Participants should
come armed with a song that is modal, preferably aeolian,
dorian, or mixolydian. They should be familiar with the
song. They will be teaching improvisation within the context
of the song.

About the Orff Approach & Level Courses
"Singing, Saying, Dancing, Playing"
The courses focus on "learning by doing", helping teachers share their music through practical music making and by creating enjoyable experiences for the students. They are based on the principles developed by Carl Orff, the composer and music educator who lived and worked in Europe from 1895 to 1982.
Participants in these courses will be exposed to a stimulating and graded repertoire of music and dance pieces. They will be encouraged to develop their confidence and skills in sharing with students of all ages and stages of development.
Orff Schulwerk offers a holistic approach to music education. It integrates singing, speech activities, movement, folk dance and the playing of percussion instruments to encourage active music making.
It can be applied to all educational levels and in community music. From the earliest ages singing and saying nursery rhymes and speech verses are combined with sound gestures or body percussion (clapping, stamping, finger clicking, etc).
These practical activities lay the foundations for broad musical development. They also lend themselves to involvement with the range of "Orff instruments" from simple non-tuned percussion (eg tambourines) to recorders, xylophones and glockenspiels.
The 'Orff' approach to music education is continuing to grow and adapt to present day needs and circumstances and is now being taught throughout the world.

and the Australian Catholic University Diploma and Certificate
Courses.
In January 2000, the Australian National Council of Orff Schulwerk approved a set of guidelines to ensure Level Course Training in Australia achieved consistent learning outcomes across courses and between States. This document sets out the minimum requirements that Level Courses must achieve in order to gain ANCOS approval.
Intent of Level
Courses
The intent of level courses is to provide training in the
pedagogy, media, repertoire, techniques, and teaching strategies that
make up the Orff approach to music and movement education.
Content of
Courses
The guidelines suggest the musical and pedagogical content and
sequence of skill and knowledge development while leaving room for
individual course developers to use the repertoire that best assists
in these processes. Each specified skill must be assessed and
demonstrated before participants move to the next level of
development. Each level course must contain all activity areas
(pedagogy, composition, movement and dance, recorder, and vocal
work). Homework, composition, peer teaching, recorder practice is
also expected
Length of
Courses
Each level course must be a minimum of 36 hours face-to face
instruction preferably over 6 days.
Sequence of
Courses
It is expected that participants will begin training at Level 1
and complete Levels 2, 3 and 4 in sequence. Although some
participants may feel they have a good knowledge of Orff Schulwerk
from conference and workshop attendance, they must realise that those
activities are not equivalent to a systematic study of all the
aspects of Orff Schulwerk. Conference organisers will scrutinise the
training of participants who wish to begin training beyond Level One
and make recommendations to those participants concerning where they
should begin their training.
Certification
To gain a Certificate of Accreditation, participants must attend
each day of the course and successfully complete all assessment
tasks, otherwise a Certificate of Participation will be issued.
The courses will be held at: Glen Waverley Anglican Church
Hall, 800 Waverley Road, Glen Waverley. Melways Ref: 71 D5
The church is less than 1km from the Glen Waverley Station. A range
of accommodation options are available. More information is available
on request and on our website soon.
Levels 3 and 4 run simultaneously from Monday 10th - Friday 14th
January 2005 * 8:45am - 5:45pm each day

"Fantastic amount of resources and useful ideas given.
Great for stretching us, to help us to develop our own
resources and really make the Orff approach our own." Celia
Williamson &endash; New Zealand "This is a highly intensive, experiential program
which not only encourages teachers to grasp the "Orff"
approach, but enables one to critically reflect on one's own
practice in a supportive environment." Catherine Short
