About Our Presenters
Stephen Abernethy (Taiwan) is Dept. Chair of Music at Taipei American School. He teaches 3rd and 4th grade Orff and Instrumental Music (Band) in Grades 7-12. Stephen has attended Orff International Workshops at the Orff Institute (Salzburg), and jazz and levels courses at the San Francisco School with Doug Goodkin. Cathy Aggett (NSW) is a singer, pianist and choral conductor and is studying Australian Art Song for her PhD at UWS. Her involvement and interest in the Orff Schulwerk movement spans the past twenty five years. Nicole Alexander (Vic) first discovered the Orff approach at a workshop in Toronto, Canada during her B.Ed studies. Captured by the magic of creative music and movement, she has applied Orff principles at an urban middle school in Toronto, a rural Steiner school in Victoria and now at Balwyn North Primary School where she is the full time music teacher of 541 students. Having resided in different parts of the globe, including Mexico she has a particular interest in world music and using music education to support multicultural understanding. Her own musical interests range from African drum and dance to Scottish fiddle. She recently returned to Canada to complete Level 2 Orff Training at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto. Sue Anderson (NSW) has 25 yrs experience as a music educator, teaching children from 2 yrs 18 yrs. Sue is the Director of Belle Music Studios (Sydney), which offers classes for pre-school children, piano and movement classes for school-age children and private piano lessons. Thom Borden (USA) completed his Orff Master Level with Jos Wuytack, has Kodaly training, and studied Orff and movement in Europe. A presenter at numerous conferences, he published Orff arrangements in the McGraw-Hill series, Spotlight on Music. Sarah Brooke (Vic) lectures in The Creative Arts at La Trobe University. She has hundreds of years of teaching experience and has presented workshops throughout Australia, NewZealand, Malaysia and the US. She has completed her Orff levels training and has enjoyed the Orff Institute Summer School and the Laban International Course in England. Lynne Burt (Vic) was introduced to the "Orff Approach" when she majored in music during her teacher training. Beginning her teaching life in the classroom, she returned to a Music Specialist role after family leave, and was able to take advantage of lots of particularly "Orfful" Professional Development. Lynne has presented at a number of Orff Workshops for VOSA as well as at various local Network Meetings, conferences, and Deakin University. Leonie Cecich is a Primary School Music Specialist who has a son with Down syndrome. Leonie writes fun and funky music to reinforce therapy concepts required for Early Intervention for children with special needs. Rosemary Clark (QLD) is vice-president of QOSA, treasurer of ANCOS and a Primary Music specialist with a B Mus- Education from the University of Cape Town. She currently teaches at Ashgrove State School. Susie Davies-Splitter (Vic) is a music and movement educator, Orff practitioner, jazz musician, composer and president of the Victorian Orff Schulwerk Association. Together with her partner Phil Splitter, she has developed the popular Welcome to Music Series of CD s, books, musicals and choral range for teachers and children of all ages. Kathy Derrin is a primary music educator who currently teaches at seven small schools (some isolated / disadvantaged) in the hinterland of Coffs Harbour in NSW. She has embraced the Orff Schulwerk process since attending an Orff summer school at UNE, Armidale in 1979 and uses the pedagogy in all aspects of her teaching. Her great loves are choral conducting and composition. Melissa Dods (Vic) lectures part time in music at Melbourne University and was a music specialist at Melbourne Grammar Junior School Grimwade House for many years. She is an experienced workshop leader with extensive background in the Kod ly and Orff approaches, having presented at music conferences in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and the ACT. Her main area of expertise is with vocal skills and for the last eight years has lectured in this area. Jackie Ewers (WA) has been teaching for the past 28 years, she has a TTC Palmerston North NZ, Grad. Dip Special Ed Mt Lawley, Performance Diploma Singing ABRSM, Orff Schulwerk Level 4, Senior Teacher 2 WA Dept.Ed. and Training. She is currently working towards a Cert IV in Work PlaceTraining and Assessment. Audrey Fine (Vic) started her career in music busking with Gary King and Tim Tyler (aka Mr P.P.) at the Lygon Street Fiesta in the early 1980s. From there, Audrey and Gary, together with friend and mentor Christoph Maubach, formed Shenanigans. Audrey was very involved with VOSA (including stints as Treasurer and President) until the early 90s. Audrey is currently teaching at Mount Scopus Memorial College (the school she was a student at from P-12!!), taking general music and Jewish Music from 3 year old kinder to grade 5. John Handley (Vic) has been teaching classroom music for the past 15 years. He has been attending Orff and Kodaly training, conferences and events for most of this time. Currently he is completing his Orff level III at the San Francisco School in San Francisco. He has been the Treasurer of VOSA for the past two years, and has a keen interest in music technology, in particular, the use of Sibelius and Groovy Music in an Orff setting. Since completing a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and a Graduate Certificate in Music Technology from University of Newcastle, Karen Henderson has had vast experience in music education from preschool to tertiary level. In 1990, drawing on her background in music teaching, performance and recording she formed Binary Designs, a Brisbane-based company specialising in linking music and technology.
A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, experienced entertainer and inspirational teacher, Mike Jackson (Vic) works at enthusing and empowering people of all ages in music making. www.mikejackson.com.au Mark Leehy and Kevin O Mara (Vic) are directors of, and occasional writers for, Bushfire Press, the Home of Cool Cats. They have also been classroom teachers, music teachers, music consultants and advisers, and professional song & dance men. Heather Libeau-Dow (NZ) lectures in Primary Curriculum Music and Professional Studies at the College of Education, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. She is also the supervisor of the Christchurch School of Music Choral Department; and teaches singing privately. Her on-going quest for effective music education has led her to Melbourne to complete Level One and Two Orff Schulwerk and to continue research aimed at improving the quality of teacher training and music programmes implemented in the primary classroom. Christine Masters specialises in teaching developmental music and piano to young children. She has taught at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and has many years experience teaching music in schools. Christine has produced the CD and DVD Music Makes Me Move . Clare McCormack (NZ) is an enthusiastic music educator, involved with ONZA (Orff NZ Aotearoa). She has a private Suzuki piano studio, teaches marimba and music in schools and runs Orff workshops for teachers and children throughout NZ. Heather McLaughlin (Vic) has taught music for many years, mainly in Melbourne. Her special interests are early childhood, family music, marimbas and recorders, and community music. She has taught in all Australian states and also in New Zealand, Canada, USA, South Africa, Norway, and in various international schools in Japan, where she has lived for five years. Dr Ros McMillan (Vic) was Head of Music Education in the University of Melbourne until she retired in 2004. She now writes school music texts which are widely used throughout Australia and New Zealand. Heather Monro is the Australian Director of Kids Music Company and is a qualified and highly experienced kindergarten teacher, presently holding the position of head teacher at Pakenham Heights Kindergarten and works with intermediate and senior students at the Dandenong Valley School. She recently completed a post grad certificate in Orff Music Education and is part of the Kids Music Company giving workshops for teachers in Melbourne and around Australia. Her passion for music with young children is to see them enjoy and learn through song, dance, movement and body percussion. Presenting with, Wendy Jensen, who has run Kids Music Company (NZ) for the last 17 years. About 350 children aged 1-10 attend weekly sessions of music. Wendy is a past primary school music specialists who now writes, records and workshops music for teaching purposes. She has run countless workshops for parents, teachers and teacher training institutions in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and the UK. Kids Music Company CDs have won international acclaim in the United Kingdom s Practical Preschool Awards for the last 4 years running. Naser Nazar was born in 1962, in Tehran .He participated in Orff music courses in 1974-1977. Since 1978, studied Classical Western Music, continued playing the piano, the clarinet and singing in choirs. In 1986, he founded a private school of music, created Childrens Music Web site (www.pars-music). He participated at AOSA conference in 2004 -2005 and 2006 as presenter. Anne Power lectures at the University of Western Sydney. She is a director of the Professional Teachers Council, NSW, a member of the executive of the NSW Orff Schulwerk and Vice Chair of ASME NSW. Biddy Seymour currently teaches at a number of special schools in Brisbane, having also had experience in teaching from Early Childhood to Tertiary levels.  Katie Wardrobe, BMUS (Hons), works part-time as an Education and Support Specialist for Sibelius Australia. She is also an approved Sibelius Training Partner, providing professional development training and advice in music technology for educators and musicians. James Humberstone, who is Sibelius’ Director of Applications and Education and Composer-in-Residence at MLC School in Sydney. He’s also a PhD candidate at UNSW, writing a case study on his childrens’ opera called “Composition for children with pedagogical outcomes”. Debbie Tait is a primary school teacher in Melbourne’s outer east and is a full time music and art specialist. She has an interest in folk and world music and was a member of the Balkan folk dance group ‘Skips’ for a number of years, performing with them and leading dance workshops at music festivals around Australia. Jan Thorp is doing this as part of her Research Masters MA (Hons) at the University of Western Sydney. With 36 years music teaching experience her passion is to effectively bring music within the grasp of ordinary people. Peter Vadiveloo is a rhythm disciple. In addition to western music, Peter has studied, composed and/or performed in a wide range of world music styles, including African, Middle Eastern, Latin and flamenco.
Gerard Van de Geer is an experienced Orff practitioner and has presented Orff workshops in Bavaria, Taiwan, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Gerard holds a fulltime position as Lecturer in Multi-Media Communications/Arts within the Faculty of Education at the University of Tasmania and is a past President of the ANCOS and TOSA. Warren Wills is an award-winning Australian composer/pianist. Some of Warren’s achievements include Winner Best Musical Carling London Award 1992 for ‘Pinmoney’ Opera and Runner-up Critics Circle Award 1993 for ‘Josephine’. Warren has a worldwide record deal with Prestige with his releases, Eleven Aspects and Piano Classics. In 2006, Warren had the no 1 show the Milliner, at CSC, and the no 6 show Woody Allen’s Murder Mystery Blues E59, on in NYC at the same time! He is currently composing the Penelopiad for the RSC, the Swan, by Margaret Atwood.
